Dr. Wawrzyniak presented at APS 2017

at the 2017 APS Conference

Dr. Wawrzyniak presented at the recent 2017 APS Conference:  "Change in Opioid Dose Does Not Correlate with Change in Pain Score or Change in Self-Reported Function".  Her collaborators included:  Dr. David J DiBenedetto, MD, Matthew Finkelman, PhD, Ronald J. Kulich, PhD, Lucy Chen, MD, and Jianren Mao, MD.

Dr. Wawrzyniak at APS 2017Opioids continue to be utilized for the treatment of chronic non-cancer pain conditions despite limited data for long-term safety and efficacy (1-4). Studies looking at the role of dosing, function, and adherence also are lacking. The primary objective of our analyses was to explore the relationship between opioid dose change and change in pain score over the course of chronic opioid therapy (COT). Secondary objectives included exploring the relationship between opioid dose change and change in disability and aberrancy as measured by urine drug toxicology (UDT).

In the course of our study, we concluded:

  • Change in opioid dose is not significantly associated with change in pain score
  • Change in opioid dose is not significantly associated with change in self-reported function
  • Lower initial opioid dose was significantly associated with occurrence of inconsistent UDT compared to higher initial opioid dose
