Marie

Marie

Marie was referred to Boston PainCare after years of back pain, three spinal surgeries, and spinal stenosis. She had her first back surgery in 1979. In 2013, Marie’s sciatica became so painful, she couldn’t walk at all for a period of time. After her last back surgery in 2014, Marie was still in chronic pain from peripheral nerve pain in her legs and feet as well as hip bursitis. Her neurosurgeon referred her to Boston Pain Care, and in January of this year, Marie began working with our Dr. Silk.

While Dr. Silk worked with Marie to manage her pain, Dr. Counihan assessed her function level, mobility and strength, and recommended she join our FAST Track Functional Activities class. Except for a short hiatus while she recovered from total knee replacement surgery, she has been an avid member. Marie appreciates the spiritual encouragement and “camaraderie” from staff and her fellow class members. Marie states that while the class is hard work, she feels “everyone in the class has some form of disability, so we all work together to the best of our ability under the direction of Dr. Counihan” who adds much fun to the class. Marie says she feels “uplifted after every class” and that the complex movements and stretches have increased her endurance and mobility tremendously.

Marie is resilient. She is a chronic pain warrior and a breast cancer survivor, and she has had a goal: not only does she want to improve her quality of life, she has wanted to take a pilgrimage of prayer and reflection for years. Marie has been working hard in our functional activities FAST Track class to prepare for a pilgrimage on Spain’s El Camino trail. Someone who could walk only short distances for the past 3 years, will be walking the 75 mile Camino this fall.

We wish Marie all the best on her journey!
