Zahid Bajwa, MD is the Director of the Headache Institute at Boston PainCare. He also serves as Boston PainCare’s Director of Clinical Research.
Dr. Bajwa is recognized nationally as one of the leading pain and headache specialists in the United States and joins the staff at Boston PainCare after a distinguished 18 year career at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center as an attending physician in the Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine. Dr. Bajwa has served at the Harvard Medical School as an instructor, assistant professor, and most recently as associate professor.
Dr. Bajwa attended medical school at Allama Iqbal Medical College in Lahore, Pakistan. He completed his postdoctoral medical training at SUNY County Hospital in New York, followed by a residency in neurology at Montefiore Medical Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. Dr. Bajwa next completed a pain medicine fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital.
Dr. Bajwa is board certified in both neurology and pain medicine by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He is also board certified in pain medicine by the American Board of Pain Medicine.
Dr. Bajwa was responsible for leading numerous clinical innovations at BIDMC. His research team focused on new and novel pain medications for the treatment of acute post-operative pain, back pain, cancer pain, migraine and persistent pain related to neural injury.
Dr. Bajwa was the Founding Director of the first Headache Center at BIDMC. He also started the Cancer Pain Service at BIDMC. In addition, Dr. Bajwa has played a key role in the education and training of the pain medicine residents and fellows since 1993.
Dr. Bajwa has received numerous awards for contributions to the field of headache and pain medicine. From BIDMC, he earned the Excellence in Clinical Research Award, Mentor of the Year Award, and he has received multiple Excellence in Teaching Awards. Most recently, he was honored with the Pakistan Ideology Council Gold Medal Award from the Pakistan Ideology Council for International Recognition in the Field of Medicine.
Dr. Bajwa has been nominated several times for various mentoring and teaching awards from Harvard Medical School. Dr. Bajwa pioneered the Harvard Medical School national pain course, “Principles and Practice of Pain Medicine.” He is also editor of the medical textbook, Principles and Practices of Pain.
A member of many professional societies, Dr. Bajwa has leadership roles in regional and national societies. After serving on the Board of Directors for many years, he currently serves as Secretary of the American Academy of Pain Medicine.
Dr. Bajwa also serves as an ad hoc reviewer for many publications including: Pain Medicine, New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, and Anesthesia and Analgesia.
